Marketing that actually rings phones.

Tradie marketing is different to marketing a product or a restaurant. People buy trade services when they need them — urgently — and trust and proximity decide who they call. Here's what works.

People don't browse for plumbers the way they browse for restaurants. Trade services are urgency-driven. Something breaks, someone's moving in, a project needs quoting — and they pick up the phone within minutes of the search. The window is short. The decision is fast.

This changes how marketing works for a trade business. You're not building a brand people follow for years before buying. You're building trust in advance, so that when the moment of need arrives, you're the obvious first call. Here's what to invest in — and in what order.

You don't need to be everywhere. You need to be visible, trustworthy, and easy to contact in the exact moment someone in your suburb needs what you do.

The five channels worth owning

01

Local SEO

The highest-return channel for most trade businesses. A well-optimised Google Business Profile and website means you show up when someone in your suburb searches for your service — and you pay nothing per click. Invest here first. The returns compound over time.

02

Your website

Not a brochure — a conversion machine. The job of your website is to turn a suspicious visitor into a phone call or submitted form. Phone number above the fold. Suburb-specific pages. Real photos. Clear services. Fast load time. Most tradie websites fail at all five. If yours does, it's costing you jobs every week.

03

Google reviews

The trust signal that converts a searcher into a caller. A Melbourne electrician with 60 reviews and a 4.9 rating will outconvert one with 8 reviews at 4.5 — even if the second one is objectively better at the job. Reviews are marketing. Build a system to collect them consistently.

04

Social media

Worth doing, but not worth obsessing over. A consistent Instagram presence showing real work builds familiarity and trust with your local community — particularly for higher-consideration services like building, landscaping, or renovation. Facebook is still relevant for Bayside and suburban Melbourne demographics. Post weekly. Don't overthink it.

05

Google Ads

Effective for fast results — but expensive if not managed carefully. Google Ads for trades in Melbourne can cost $15–40 per click in competitive categories. Done well, it generates quality leads immediately. Done poorly, it burns through budget with nothing to show. Use it to fill gaps while SEO builds, or for high-value seasonal campaigns.

Priority order: a simple checklist

1.Get a properly built, fast, mobile-optimised website
2.Claim and fully optimise your Google Business Profile
3.Build a consistent review collection system — aim for 2–3 per month
4.Add suburb-specific landing pages for your key service areas
5.Post weekly on Instagram — real job photos, no stock images
6.Consider Google Ads once your website converts well

The mistakes most tradies make

Paying for ads before the website converts. Running Google Ads to a homepage that loads slowly on mobile, has no phone number visible, and looks like it was built in 2016. The ad spend is wasted because the website doesn't close.

Treating SEO as an expense rather than an investment. SEO takes 3–6 months to show meaningful results, which puts off impatient buyers. But a tradie who starts SEO in March and is patient through May will have leads coming in at zero cost-per-click for years.

Ignoring the look of their brand. A logo from Canva and stock photos signal "cheap job, cheap tradie" — regardless of the quality of the actual work. In Bayside and South East Melbourne, the homeowners you want to attract are making $30,000–$80,000+ decisions. They judge professionalism before they dial.
